Imtiaz Ali delivered a masterclass on the opening day of the Sikkim International Film Festival, offering valuable insights into filmmaking and storytelling.
During his session titled ‘The Craft of Directing and Screenwriting’, Ali emphasised the significance of pre-production, describing it as a vital phase that shapes both the narrative and overall execution of a film.
Drawing from his own experience, he spoke about how different projects demand different approaches. He noted that films like Rockstar required longer shooting schedules, whereas Highway was completed in a much shorter timeframe.
According to an official statement, the filmmaker highlighted his preference for a flexible and spontaneous style of working, adding that he does not follow a rigid pattern in his creative process.
Ali also praised the Sikkim government, led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, for organising the festival. He said one of his main reasons for attending was to connect with people in the region and expressed his desire to return to Sikkim for future film projects.
The director also showed keen interest in collaborating with local talent and exploring stories from the Northeast.
