Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday highlighted the enduring significance of the historic ‘Chavdar Tale Satyagraha’, describing it as a powerful symbol of human dignity and social equality.

He noted that the state government has launched an extensive development project for the historic Chavdar Tale lake in Mahad, which is closely linked to Dr B. R. Ambedkar’s landmark movement. The site is set to mark 100 years of the protest next year.

Speaking at the foundation-laying ceremony, Fadnavis said the initiative is not limited to cleaning the lake, but also focuses on overall development of the surrounding area. Plans include beautification efforts and the addition of public amenities to enhance the site’s significance.

Recalling the historic movement, he said the Satyagraha stood for equality and respect at a time when society was deeply divided. He added that it continues to serve as a reminder of the principles of justice and humanity championed by Dr Ambedkar, and assured that the development will reflect those ideals.

On March 20, 1927, Dr Ambedkar, along with his followers, gathered in Mahad and later went to the Chavdar Tale to drink water, asserting the rights of Dalits to access public water sources. This act came to be known as the ‘Chavdar Tale Satyagraha’.
