People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi on Friday criticised the film The Kerala Story 2, alleging that the entertainment sector, which once played a constructive role in highlighting social issues, has now been “weaponised” to insult Muslims.

Speaking to ANI, Mehdi said that various sectors were increasingly being used to target a particular community. “Every sector has been weaponised to insult Muslims. There was a time when the entertainment sector played an important role in showcasing social issues, but now that too has been weaponised,” he alleged.

The remarks come amid growing controversy surrounding the film. On Thursday, the Kerala High Court issued a notice to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the makers of The Kerala Story 2 after a petition sought the cancellation of the censor certificate granted to the sequel.

The petition was filed by Sreedev Namboothiri, a resident of Chittariparamba in Kannur district, who claimed that the film contains “malicious and stereotypical projections” that scandalise the entire state of Kerala without factual basis. The next hearing in the matter has been scheduled for February 24.

The makers recently released the trailer of the sequel, which portrays Hindu women allegedly being trapped by Muslim men under the guise of love, depicting how romance and rebellion transform into control and silence. The film has been written by Amarnath Jha and Vipul Amrutlal Shah, and directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh.

The film has triggered strong political reactions in Kerala and beyond. Earlier, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed firm opposition to reports of a sequel, stating that such a film would be another attempt to foment “communal discord” in the state.

The Kerala Story 2 features a new cast, including Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia and Aishwarya Ojha, who play the central characters whose lives are shown as being disrupted by alleged planned conversion efforts.

The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on February 27, 2026, even as legal and political scrutiny around it continues.
