"There are no shortcuts to success in life; it is your hard work alone that leads you to your ultimate goal. The whole world stands by you in your success, but the one who supports you during your struggle is your true well-wisher."

This is the gist of the story of 32-year-old Farhan Fatima, the first Muslim woman Kathak exponent and actor from Uttar Pradesh. Her journey, which began in Lucknow, has now extended to the glamour and film industries of Delhi and Mumbai.

However, achieving this milestone involved a long saga of struggle, discipline, and opposition from her family.

For Farhan, hailing from a traditional Muslim family, learning Kathak and theatre was a big challenge. She faced the displeasure and disapproval of her entire extended family. Relatives strongly objected to a young woman travelling alone to Delhi and Mumbai for work.

Amid this her father, Azhar Ahmed, a former Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) with the Uttar Pradesh Police, became her greatest pillar of support and cheer leader.

Instead of bowing to societal pressure, he helped his daughter’s dreams take flight. Farhan recalls, "My father always listened to what was in my heart and told me to do whatever I felt was right, provided I stayed within the bounds of propriety."

She says that lesson from her father remains the guiding principle of her life to this day.

Throughout her work in theatre and performance, Farhan has always been conscious that her actions bring pride to her family. That is why, despite years of struggle, she turned down several lucrative roles that would have made it impossible for her to look her family in the eye.

She has no regrets about this. She believes that while Kathak and acting are her passions, she keeps in mind the dignity and honour of her family. Farhan says, "Art and culture instil values ​​in us, and these values ​​strengthen our families. There should be absolutely no room for compromise on this."

Farhan began training in Kathak when she was 12 years old. She earned the 'Kathak Visharad' degree under the guidance of the renowned Kathak dancer Veena Singh at the prestigious Bhatkhande Sanskrit University in Lucknow.

A year later, she gave her first stage performance at the Birbal Sahni Institute under the mentorship of the renowned Guru Surendra Saikia, Director of the Kathak Kala Kendra. Alongside Kathak, she also performed in numerous semi-classical music programs.

Recognising her artistic talent, stalwarts of the Lucknow theatre scene advised her to try her hand at acting.

Her debut telefilm, Kasaaiwada, aired on Lucknow Doordarshan, garnered significant acclaim, with audiences highly appreciating her performance. The acting journey that began in theatre continues to this day.

To establish a distinct identity in the acting world, Farhan headed to Mumbai in 2013. The glamour of the metropolis and the struggles inherent in the 'City of Dreams' put her to a rigorous test. After nearly three years of intense struggle, she secured an opportunity to work in director Anand Rai’s film Nakhrewali during 2016–17.

Since then, there has been no looking back. She has showcased her acting prowess in around a dozen films to date, including Hamare Baarah, directed by Kamal Chandra. Her performance in the web series Thukra Ke Mera Pyaar also received widespread appreciation.

Farhan has also delivered powerful performances in several popular television serials. Beyond Star Plus's hit show Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai, her characters in serials such as Todkar Dil Mera, Zee TV's Bhaiya Kya Chal Raha Hai, Sony SAB's Baalveer and RK Laxman Ki Duniya, and Sahara One's Aakhir Bahu Bhi Toh Beti Hai have earned a special place in the hearts of the audience.
