Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Friday said the world will get to witness Odisha’s deep passion for sports as it prepares to host the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2028.
He said the state is eager to welcome athletes and spectators from across the globe while showcasing its organisational capabilities and renowned Indian hospitality. The hosting rights for the prestigious championship were awarded to India by World Athletics, with Odisha chosen as the venue.
In a social media post, Majhi described the development as a matter of immense pride, noting that the event will return to India after a gap of more than two decades. He said the milestone highlights Odisha’s growing stature as a global sporting destination and reflects its commitment to excellence in sports infrastructure and management.
The chief minister added that the state has firmly established itself on the international stage and is ready to demonstrate its enthusiasm for sports to the world. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continued support in strengthening the country’s sports ecosystem.
Calling it a proud moment for both Odisha and the nation, Majhi expressed gratitude to World Athletics and the Athletics Federation of India for entrusting the state with hosting the prestigious championship.
According to official details, the event will take place from March 3 to 5, 2028, marking the first time India will host a global indoor track and field championship. Typically, the competition features 26 events—13 each for men and women—held over three days.

Majhi also highlighted Odisha’s sustained efforts over the past decade to promote sports as a key component of its development strategy. With continued investment in infrastructure, athlete training, and high-performance systems, the state has become a preferred destination for major international sporting events, including the FIH Hockey Men's World Cup.
