US President Donald Trump on Tuesday claimed that Iran is facing a “state of collapse” and has approached Washington seeking assistance to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump suggested that Tehran’s request was linked to internal leadership challenges, which he said the country is attempting to resolve.

The statement comes at a time of heightened global concern over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route that carries a substantial share of the world’s oil shipments, making its status crucial for international energy markets.

Earlier, Trump reportedly indicated reluctance to accept a recent diplomatic proposal from Tehran aimed at easing tensions. According to CNN, citing informed sources, the proposal includes reopening maritime traffic through the strait while postponing contentious issues such as Iran’s nuclear programme for future negotiations.

During a meeting with national security advisers, the US President is said to have expressed reservations about the plan, with officials concerned that reopening the waterway without addressing uranium enrichment and stockpiles could weaken Washington’s leverage in ongoing negotiations.

At the same time, continuing restrictions on the strait carry economic risks, as disruptions in the route have contributed to elevated global energy prices and increased fuel costs in the United States.

The White House confirmed that the latest Iranian proposal is under discussion at the highest levels. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that the matter had been reviewed by the President and his national security team, though no final decision has been announced so far.

She added that while discussions are ongoing, further clarity on the administration’s stance is expected directly from the President in the near future.
