Zoho co-founder and chief scientist Sridhar Vembu has shared insights into how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming software development at the company, while emphasizing that engineers remain fully responsible for the code they produce.
In a post on Friday, Vembu explained, “We use AI coding tools across the company, with the caution that engineers must review, approve, and take responsibility for all code.” He clarified that AI tools are optional for staff, noting, “We don’t mandate AI tools. Experienced engineers decide how best to use AI in their work.”
Weeks of Work Now Done in a Day
Vembu highlighted an example of a senior engineer with two decades of experience, handling complex UI tasks where performance is critical. The engineer reported that AI has enabled him to “ship features in a day that would previously have taken three weeks.” Vembu stressed that human expertise is still essential, explaining, “AI required him to provide the structure, while it fleshed out the details. Experience remains key.”
Empowering Junior Engineers
AI is also opening new opportunities for less experienced team members. Vembu shared an example of a junior engineer who developed an internal tool using AI, which is now being adopted by other teams within Zoho. According to Vembu, the engineer “could not have built the tool without AI,” demonstrating how AI accelerates learning and productivity for younger staff.
Optimism for UI Development
Reflecting on these experiences, Vembu said there is strong optimism around AI in user interface development, noting that it acts as an accelerator rather than a replacement for human skills. He clarified that these observations are based on collective experience across Zoho and not tied to his personal research projects.
