Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday urged young doctors to embrace innovation, research and lifelong learning, while stressing that technology can never replace compassion and ethical values in medicine.
She was addressing the second convocation of All India Institute of Medical Sciences Nagpur.
Murmu said the daughters and sons of the country would together help realise the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
She said doctors must possess not only a spirit of service but also a constant commitment to learning.
“Curiosity is the foundation of progress. The motivation to discover new solutions in medical science will not only make you an excellent doctor but also provide better opportunities for service,” she said.
The President encouraged graduates to adopt innovation, research and continuous learning, but reminded them that ethical values hold the highest place in healthcare.
“No matter how advanced technology becomes, it cannot replace compassion, honesty, and a patient-centred approach,” she said.
She added that compassion makes a person not only a good doctor but also a good human being.
Murmu said the government had launched several healthcare initiatives over the past decade to improve access to treatment.
She noted that more than 43 crore health cards had been issued under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Kalyan Arogya Yojana, which provides health cover of up to Rs 5 lakh per beneficiary family.
She also said more than 1.85 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandir facilities had been established to strengthen primary healthcare services.
Calling medicine a privileged profession, Murmu said those connected to the medical field have a special opportunity to serve humanity and should fulfil that responsibility with pride and sensitivity.
