Nitin Nabin on Tuesday officially assumed charge as the national president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, succeeding J P Nadda and marking the beginning of a new phase for the ruling party.

The declaration was made by K Laxman, the returning officer for the BJP’s organisational elections, who handed over the certificate of election to the 45-year-old leader. With this, Nabin becomes the youngest person to head the party at the national level.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, outgoing president J P Nadda, and senior BJP leaders including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and Nitin Gadkari were present at the party headquarters to witness the transition of leadership.

Founded in 1980, the BJP is being led by its 12th national president, coincidentally in the same year Nabin was born.

Known for maintaining a low public profile, Nabin had stepped down as Bihar’s minister for law and justice, urban development and housing after being appointed BJP’s working president on December 14.

Announcing the results, Laxman said the election reflected the party’s organisational ethos, where leadership emerges through commitment and dedication rather than lineage.

Addressing party workers, Nadda described the occasion as historic and congratulated Nabin, calling him a young, energetic and capable leader taking charge of the world’s largest political organisation.
